How to Grill a Perfect Steak

A comprehensive guide to grilling the perfect steak with tips, tricks, and delicious variations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 Steaks (NY Strip, Ribeye, Filet Mignon) (1-inch thick)
  • Kosher Salt
  • Ground Black Pepper
  • Simple Steak Marinade (e.g., olive oil, garlic, herbs)
  • Steak Dry Rub for Grilling (paprika, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder)

Instructions

  1. Choose Your Steaks: Begin with a perfect cut of meat. You can go for NY strip, ribeye, or filet mignon – each brings its unique flavor.
  2. Marinate or Season: If you’re marinating, pour the marinade into a resealable bag or bowl, and add the steaks. Let them soak in flavor for at least 30 minutes or up to 4 hours. If skipping marinade, sprinkle kosher salt and black pepper on both sides 30-60 minutes before grilling.
  3. Get the Grill Hot: Preheat your grill to high heat (around 450°F to 500°F).
  4. Place your steaks on the hottest part of the grill at a 45-degree angle. Let them sear for about 3-4 minutes before flipping.
  5. Check for Perfect Grilling: After 3-4 minutes, flip the steaks and sear the other side for another 3-4 minutes.
  6. Get an Instant-Read Thermometer: Check internal temperatures for doneness.
  7. Add Finishing Touches: Consider adding herb butter right before taking off the grill.
  8. Rest the Steaks: Remove the steaks from the grill and let them rest for 5-10 minutes.
  9. Slice against the grain and serve with choice of sides.

Notes

Cover loosely with foil while resting. A sprinkle of flaky sea salt just before serving adds an incredible finish.
