Homemade Maraschino Cherries

Ingredients

  • Fresh cherries
  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Almond extract
  • Red food coloring (optional)
  • Vanilla extract
  • Brandy (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Cherries
  2. Wash and Stem: Begin by washing your fresh cherries under cool water.
  3. Pit: You can use a cherry pitter or carefully cut each cherry in half to remove the pit.
  4. Create the Syrup
  5. Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, 2 cups of sugar, and a few drops of red food coloring.
  6. Stir Until Dissolved: Stir until the sugar completely dissolves.
  7. Flavor It: Add 1 teaspoon each of almond extract and vanilla extract to the syrup and let it simmer.
  8. Prepare the Cherries
  9. Add Cherries to the Syrup: Carefully add your pitted cherries to the hot syrup.
  10. Simmer: Allow the cherries to simmer for about 5-10 minutes.
  11. Cool and Jar
  12. Cool Down: Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes.
  13. Jar Them Up: Transfer the cherries into a clean glass jar and pour the syrup over them.
  14. Seal and Store: Seal the jar and let it cool to room temperature before storing it in the fridge.
