Gâteau Renversé au Sirop d’Érable et aux Pommes

An enchanting upside-down cake featuring sweet apples drizzled with rich maple syrup, bringing warm kitchen memories to life.

  • 1 cup (250 g) maple syrup
  • ¾ cup butter
  • 1 ½ cups (200 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ teaspoons (10 g) baking powder
  • A pinch of salt
  • ¼ cup (60 g) vegetable shortening or softened butter
  • ⅔ cup (130 g) sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup (180 g) milk
  • ½ teaspoon (3 g) vanilla extract
  • 34 apples, peeled and sliced

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a round cake pan.
  2. Sauté the sliced apples in a skillet with a splash of maple syrup and a little butter for 5-7 minutes.
  3. Cream together the softened butter, vegetable shortening, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined. Gradually add in the milk and maple syrup.
  5. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients.
  6. Arrange the sautéed apples evenly on the bottom of the prepared pan. Pour the cake batter over the apples.
  7. Bake for about 30-35 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before inverting onto a serving platter.

Notes

For added texture, consider mixing in nuts. If you’re feeling adventurous, try swapping apples for pears or berries.
