A delightful Caramelized Apple Upside-Down Cake that evokes sweet memories and is perfect for sharing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt 1/2 cup of butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Mix in 1 cup of sugar and let it bubble gently for about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in your sliced apples to coat them in the caramel mixture. Cook for about 5 more minutes until they start to soften.
  4. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  5. Beat the eggs with the remaining sugar until pale and frothy. Gradually add in the milk and vanilla extract, mixing well.
  6. Fold the wet mixture into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  7. Pour the apple-caramel mixture into a 9-inch round cake pan. Then gently pour the batter over the apples.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes.
  10. Flip the cake onto a large plate and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For different flavors, consider adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to the apples or using pears in place of apples.
