Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 Apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 2 cups Milk (whole, almond, or oat)
  • 3 Eggs (or aquafaba)
  • 1 cup Sugar (white or brown)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract (or almond extract)
  • 1/4 cup Flour (gluten-free optional)
  • 1 pinch of Salt
  • Butter (for greasing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice your apples into thin wedges. Toss them in a bowl with a sprinkle of sugar and a dash of cinnamon.
  3. Melt a tablespoon of butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the apples and sauté until tender (about 5-7 minutes).
  4. Transfer the apples into a greased baking dish, spreading them evenly.
  5. Whisk together the eggs and sugar until pale and frothy in a large mixing bowl.
  6. Pour in the milk while continuing to whisk. Add vanilla, salt, and flour, mixing until smooth.
  7. Pour the custard mixture over the caramelized apples in the baking dish.
  8. Bake for 35-45 minutes, or until set and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Allow the flan to cool slightly before refrigerating it for a couple of hours.
  10. Run a knife around the edges, place a serving plate over it, and flip to release the flan.
