Steak Queso Rice

A comforting dish that blends tender steak with creamy cheese sauce and fluffy rice, reminiscent of cozy family gatherings.

  • 1 lb steak strips (sirloin, flank, or ribeye)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • 1 cup jasmine or basmati rice
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 cup shredded white cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup Monterey Jack cheese
  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons cream cheese
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sour cream
  • ½ cup diced tomatoes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the steak by seasoning with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, paprika, and cumin.
  2. Cook the steak in a skillet over medium-high heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side.
  3. Prepare the rice by toasting it in the skillet for 2 minutes.
  4. Add beef broth to the skillet, bring to a simmer, and cook covered for about 15-20 minutes.
  5. Create the queso by cooking heavy cream, cream cheese, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper in a saucepan.
  6. Mix in the shredded cheeses gradually until melted.
  7. Bring everything together by adding the steak to the rice and stirring in the cheese sauce.
  8. Garnish with diced tomatoes, jalapeños, cilantro, and sour cream before serving.

Notes

Rinse rice under cold water for fluffier results. Adjust spices and salts according to taste.
