Southern Hamburger Steak

A classic Southern comfort food dish featuring juicy hamburger steaks smothered in delicious gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Prep the Ingredients: Start by slicing the onion and mushrooms.
  2. Make the Patties: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, sliced onion, bread crumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Shape into 4 equal patties.
  3. Brown the Patties: In a skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat and add patties, cooking for about 4 minutes on each side until browned.
  4. Sauté the Vegetables: In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and cook until golden brown and tender. Add remaining onions and sauté for another 3-4 minutes.
  5. Create the Gravy: Pour in the beef broth, return patties to the skillet, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes until gravy thickens.
  6. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the patties over mashed potatoes or rice, drizzling with extra gravy and garnishing with fresh parsley.

Notes

For a cheesy delight, add shredded cheese on top of patties during the last few minutes of cooking. You can also make this dish ahead of time and freeze the patties.
